In today's Braves'spring training game against the Yankees, two Braves had to leave early. Those two players are first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Ryan Doumit.
A right middle finger contusion is what Doumit was diagnosed with after he had to undergo precautionary X-rays, which was announced by the Braves. What triggered the injury was Doumit taking a foul ball off of his bare right hand while the game was currently in the second inning.
"He was moving it around so let's keep our fingers crossed I don't think it's anything that's going to be serious," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez had said immediately following the game. "The good thing is he kept his fingers loose, there's some absorption there, and maybe that saved him."
Also injuring his hand was Freddie Freeman (who was the most valuable player for the Braves last season) except for Freddie it was his left hand. Freeman was hit by a line drive. Afterwards he was taken out of the game for precautionary measures.
"It's precautionary," Freeman said. "There's no point in trying to be a hero in spring training, especially when we're getting close to the end. Just get some ice on it the next couple days and see where we go from there."
Last month Freeman and the Braves agreed to a $135 million, eight-year deal, so it is drastically important that he is able to get to the season healthy.
"The last four or five games, you wish you could call the Commissioner and say, 'Our team's ready. Let's start the season. We don't have to play another five,'" Gonzalez said. "I'm sure everybody feels that way but we can't, we can't do that. Every time there's a little flinch or somebody goes down or you get one of those crazy (injuries), you start worrying. I think we're going to be OK there."
The Braves have one of the best medical staffs in all of sports, so Freeman and Doumit will be safe in their hands.
"This one is not too bad I don’t think, so we'll be all right," said Freeman.
