The Georgia Bulldogs have plenty of talent at the quarterback position including Hutson Mason (senior), Faton Bauta (redshirt sophmore), Jacob Park (freshman), and Brice Ramsey (redshirt freshman). We all know Mason will have the starting role as the playcaller, but who will be behind him?
If there was anything to help this question get answered, it would have been the 2014 Georgia Bulldogs spring game (The Red Team earned a hard-fought 27-24 victory over the Black Team), which was on Saturday. Head coach Mark Richt was obviously one of the spectators and had his own take on it.
"I'm not going to sit here and say what kind of pecking order we have because it was just one day and we've got a couple more days of practice left, but I thought the quarterback play overall was pretty good today," Richt said.
Faton Bauta is without a question the most athletically gifted quarterback on the roster. He is the clear-cut favorite (if there is one) for the number two spot on the depth chart. Bauta is a run-first syle quarterback, but can also beat opposing teams/defenses with his arm if needed. During the spring game, Bauta throw 28 passes, 16 of which were caught while also racking up 232 yards, two touchdowns, and only a single interception.
"Faton, I think, made a wise decision to go with the normal-colored jersey, to play live. I think it allowed him to show what he could do athletically to add to his game," head coach Mark Richt said. "I think Brice, he struggled a today with a little bit of his accuracy. He and Jacob both threw a couple balls that probably shouldn't have been thrown but that’s just the learning process that you go through as a young quarterback."
Brice Ramsey seems to be in second place behind front-runner Bauta. He is a 6'3", 205 lb redshirt freshman out of Camden County, Georgia. Ramsey put up a poor performance at the spring game throwing for 78 yards will only connecting on two out of 13 passes and also throwing an interception.
"Obviously, we've had multiple closed practices and closed scrimmages and all people really get are the stats and whatever, but at the same time, I've been making strides this spring compared to last spring," Ramsey said. "I'm still striving to get better and better each and every day and I'm just excited for the rest of the year."
Jacob Park (like Ramsey) is also a freshman, but (unlike Ramsey) he looks to be behind everyone else. Park was apart of the 2014 Georgia Bulldogs recruiting class and was ranked as the 191th player in the country and a four-star prospect. The 2013 South Carolina Mr. Football winner played the least out of the four quarterbacks. He also showed the least potential.
"I taught him a lot in the spring and he gets in the meetings and he's a little overwhelmed because...everybody's way above him as far as the mental aspect of the playbook." redshirt senior quarterback Hutson Mason said. "He, like every other freshman, needs to get in the weight room, get bigger and stronger in his legs and upper body just like I did when I was a freshman. It’s all about the growth process for freshmen. Can they continue to get better each year, each month? And as long as he does that, he has the talent, he has the arm."
