This off-season the Atlanta Falcons will be looking for someone to fill into the starting job at the free safety position. They have thought about numerous players and their potential to do so.
Some of those players include Louis Delmas, Champ Bailey, etc.
"We in fact did consider a safety, then a number of other positions," falcon general manger Thomas Dimitroff said. "But we felt the three that we acquired were of significant importance to us moving forward in the building of the front on this football team."
But when asked about whether the Falcons need necessarily needed a safety, of course he answered it in a way where he wouldn't throw any of their current safeties under-the-bus.
"Do we need a safety? I think it's always important to have good, experienced safeties and safeties that will make plays on the ball and be adept and consistent tacklers," he said. "So, we will always look to continue to improve depth, like we've always said. Improving our group of safeties, that's always going to be an important thing for us."
Before the free agency period in the NFL started, the Falcons weren't worried about that starting free safety spot on the depth chart, but the used-to-be starter, Thomas Decoud, has been released.
"I believe in the NFL today, so-called cap casualties are an issue for every team unless you're at the top of the heap with $30 million to $40 million dollars available," he said. "It's something that we will get into as we continue to analyze and re-evaluate this roster as it stands."
Dimitroff showed high-praise of the former Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey who can also play safety.
"I believe that Champ has the ability to continue to play in this league," he said of the 35-year-old Bailey. "It will be interesting to see where he signs."
