Four Georgia Bulldogs players have been charged with multiple counts of theft by deception. Those four include promising safety Tray Matthews, defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor, wide receiver Uriah LeMay, and defensive end James DeLoach.
Tuesday morning Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt released this statement: "I'm aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way."
Matthews was charged with three counts of theft by deception and was released after posting a $4,500 bond.
LeMay was charged with four counts of theft by deception. He was released after posting a $6,000 bond.
Taylor and DeLoach were both charged with two counts of theft by deception and were also both released after posting $3,000 bonds.
LeMay was also charged with double-dipping his roommates' check while Matthews, Taylor, and DeLoach were all accused of double-dipping their own checks.
"Matthews, DeLoach and Taylor would basically take that check and deposit it through a mobile banking ap. And then within a short period of time would go to a local convenience store and cash the checks. So they basically would cash the check twice," UGA Chief of police Jimmy Williamsson said.
It was discovered that the players double-dipped the checks when UGA's finance departments saw that the checks.
"They have to account for these types of things for audits. And they also have to be able to show that they aren't outside compliance, that this was done through a fraudulent means," Williamson said.
All of the players charged were released from Clarke County Jail Monday night.
"It didn't take long to look into it. A few days," Williamson said.
No disciplinary action has been announced for possibly opening day. They'll be facing the Clemson Tigers who already have four players suspended. They are Corey Crawford, David Beasley, Garry Peters and Shaq Anthony.
