The Georgia Bulldogs defense have suffered another big blow in the secondary (Josh Harvey-Clemons being dismissed was the first) as cornerback Shaq Wiggins, who lead the team in interceptions last season, is transferring from the University of Georgia.
"Shaq and I have been talking over the last few days, and a fresh start is what he believes is in his best interest," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "We respect his decision and certainly wish him nothing but the best."
In 2013, Wiggins posted two interceptions (returned for a total of 39 yards, which included a touchdown against the Vanderbilt Commodores), four pass deflections, and 18 total tackles (16 solo and two assisted). He was also arguably Georgia's best cornerback.
Now Wiggins joins Harvey-Clemons out the door and a possible suspension still looms for freshman safety Tray Matthews, who was recently arrested along with three other Bulldogs (defensive lineman John Taylor, wide receiver Uriah LeMay, and defensive end James DeLoach) in connection to a scam involving stipend checks.
Transfers and dismissals are starting to become the norm for the Georgia Bulldogs football program. Zach Mettenberger, Nick Marshall, Isaiah Crowell, Chris Sanders, Ty Flournoy-Smith, Jordan Love, Sanford Seay, and Brent Benedict have all either transferred or been dismissed in the last couple years. Three of which were selected in the past NFL draft.
"A couple guys left because they wanted to leave the program," Richt said at the time. "A couple left because we helped them out the door."
Notable members of the Georgia secondary still there include the following:
Tray Matthews
Damian Swann
Brendan Langley
Sheldon Dawsen
Corey Moore
Conner Norman
Quincey Mauger
Blake Sailors
Shaquille Fluker
Now without a doubt, coach Richt will have to assemble what he thinks is the best starting depth chart for the 2014-15 division 1 college football season.
