After their latest slump and switching up the lineup several times, the Atlanta Braves look to be 'back on track,' after wining their last two games (both of which against teams likely to make the playoffs, the Brewers and Cardinals) and scoring a total of 15 runs to the opposition's eight runs.
In the month of May, before the latest offensive surge, the Braves had a record of 5-10, now they look to end up well above .500 before the month ends. The Braves are currently 24-19 and rank 29th in total runs scored (144), 25th in batting average (.235), 28th in on-base percentage (.296), and 19th in slugging percentage (.378), but if their bats continue to get going, look for them to make a statement in the next few weeks.
Monday's 9-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers had to be the most impressive offensive showing off the last few weeks. The only low point was that of Chris Johnson's (who was the only Brave without a hit) night where he was held hitless in five total at-bats, but even with that the home team looked spot on.
"I thought yesterday's game might be of those turn-you-over (games)," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, who reiterated that in Monday's scouting meeting before the Braves played the Brewers. "Sometimes you think a win is a win, but yesterday the way we won that game, it might be the biggest win we've had all year. We'll see. Hopefully it'll carry us over for a long time."
Going yard were first baseman Freddie Freeman, left fielder Justin Upton, and pinch hitter/catcher Ryan Doumit, while others tallied multiple hits like right fielder Jason Heyward (3-4), shortstop Andrelton Simmons (3-5), and second baseman Ramiro Pena (2-5).
This season, Atlanta was one of the few teams throughout Major League Baseball, who has posted more strikeouts than hits, that has not been the case the last two days as they have posted 22 hits and only 15 strikeouts.
As mentioned above, Ryan Doumit was one of the few to send a pitch to the stands, but it wasn't just an ordinary homer, it was home run number 100.
"It's a pretty cool milestone," said Doumit, a 10-year veteran with the Pirates, Twins and Braves. "Ninety-nine has been on my mind for a little bit so now it's cool to get there and tomorrow it's back to business."
The Braves will look to continue their hot-hitting Tuesday against the 'Brew Crew' once again with Julio Teheran on the mound.
