Here's the commissioner with the pick...
The St. Louis Rams have traded the 2nd overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons...
With the 2nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Jadeveon Clowney, defensive end, South Carolina...
That's a great selection for the Falcons. You bringing in a player who can instantly elevate a defense, which is good news for Atlanta because their defense was absolutely terrible last season.
Here are the measurables for the 2nd overall selection made earlier today by the Falcons:
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 274 LBS
AGE: 21
Arms: 34 1/2"
40-YD Dash: 4.58 Seconds
Vertical Jump: 37 1/2"
225 Bench: 21
What makes this pick so great is that it's not just a good move by the team that made the selection, but for the player himself also, Jadeveon Clowney. He will be playing fairly close to 'home' and there are a few other former South Carolina Gamecocks already on the Falcons, which will add to the chemistry on the defense.
The man who had the biggest 'say-so' in the choice, Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, spoke to the media last the night about the new 'face of the defense.'
"We feel very good about our decision from the standpoint of Jadeveon on the field and off the field, and the leadership he will bring to this team in so many years to come," Dimitroff said. "We are sold on the idea that he can become one of the top defensive ends in this league.
Defenseive coordinator Mike Nolan, who will be coaching Clowney during the offseason, regular season, and hopefully preseason, also spoke on the subject.
"He's a lot faster and stronger than people give him credit for," said Nolan. "He can run by you, he can bullrush through you, and he's a good pass deflector too. Jadeveon brings so much to the table, and it's guys like him that make me enjoy preparing defensive schemes before the season starts because there are so many different ways you can use him.
