The 24th pick of the 2009 draft, defensive tackle Peria Jerry, has re-signed with the Atlanta Falcons. Jerry will most likely relieve a starter in one of the defensive tackle spots (Babineaux or Soliai) or serve as a rotational defensive end (Tyson Jackson).
There was acually no deal being worked out between the two sides until now.
"There's nothing going on," said agent Bus Cook said on Friday, March 7th before the start of free agency.
Jerry was drafted as a first round pick, but has never really lived up to the hype that was surrounding him coming out of college because of a gruesome knee injury in his second NFL game. Ever since, he was played in every game from 2009 to 2013.
"Whatever happens, happens," Jerry said. "You (don't) have any control over that. Really, we are just playing it by ear to see what happens. There is nothing that you can do about it. That’s the people upstairs' decision."
The Falcons now look to have done all they will do on the defensive line this offseason unless they go after former South Carolina Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney in this upcoming draft. So far they have re-signed defensive tackles Jonathan Babieaux, Corey Peters and Jerry, and signed defensive tackle Paul Soliai and defensive end Tyson Jackson.
Most likely the Falcons will start to work more on the offensive line now. Offensive guard Jon Asamoah, center/guard Joe Hawley and offensive tackles Gabe Carimi and Mike Johnson have all been signed/re-signed, while offensive guard Garrett Reynolds has been the only one to be cut as of right now.
The Ole Miss alumi has posted 5.5 sacks, 67 tackles, one fumble recovery and three pass deflections throughout his five-year career with the Falcons and says that he actually wanted to stay in Atlanta, which he eventually was able to work out a deal to do so.
"I started here and would love to stay here."
